Belgium's Procotex has launched UD prepregs for high performance composites made from hackled flax sliver - offering significant ecological benefits. Both thermoplast and thermoset options are offered in a material that is 100% renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and compostable.
The products are said to be characterised by high strength and stiffness and low weight. They also have low density compared to glass fibre and other composite fibres, while also being characterised by high vibration absorption, low abrasion and insulating properties.
Applications are envisaged in the automotive and transportation industries, and also in wind energy.
